My Top 5 Natural Personal Care Products

Personal care can cover tasks involving your hygiene (eg. showering, oral care) or your appearance (eg. dressing, shaving, or other grooming). It’s usually those things we do daily and things most of us don’t give much thought to. It wasn’t until I had my first child that I really started thinking about what we use at home for hygiene. Up until that point, I prided myself (and still do to a certain extent) on being a “wash & go” kind of girl. The less I need to do in the morning to get out the door, or in the evening to get to bed, the better!

I still have that mentality, “less is best”, three babies later. But my priority focus is “less toxins, more natural”. Two ways I accomplish achieving that priority focus in our personal care products: Choose doTERRA and make my own.

Here’s a short list of my top 5 personal care products:

Natural Sensitive Deodorant infused with dōTERRA® Douglas Fir & Greek Orange

One of the ingredients I dislike most in antiperspirants is aluminum. Aluminum salts are meant to plug pores to reduce sweating. Aluminum in antiperspirants and other topical products have been linked to breast cancers. Sweating is natural – helps to cool the body and eliminate toxic waste. However, there are certainly times when one doesn’t need to show physical signs of sweating, especially under your pits. Instead of aluminum salts, our favorite doTERRA natural deodorant uses tapioca starch. Tapioca starch helps to absorb underarm moisture. I also love that this natural deodorant doesn’t have an overwhelming, overpowering aroma. Definitely not the fake perfumey scent found in so many deodorants! Instead, the scent is subtle. Subtle enough for all the Walters!

doTERRA On Guard Natural Whitening Toothpaste
We have been super fans of this toothpaste since we discovered it! It has proved its effectiveness over and over again. My kiddos have excellent dental visits and have had no more than 2 cavities between them since 2018. (These cavities are totally the result of one of my kiddos refusing to brush, or forgetting as I’m told, as often as he/she should. Not naming names or revealing gender to protect the innocent 😉) The subtle cinnamon flavor is refreshing. A little goes a long way – one tube lasts my family of 4 about 5 to 6 weeks. Incredibly cost-effective!
DIY Mouthwash

Mouthrinses (mouthwashes) are not a replacement for daily brushing! This is in addition to brushing. I’ve shared My Healthy Mouth Routine in a previous article. And I’ve shared this recipe too. Since then, I’ve made two modifications to our DIY Mouthwash: I’ve replaced Spearmint with SuperMint (more minty & removes the need for Peppermint) and I’ve added Myrrh (antimicrobial properties). I use an empty kombucha bottle that looks like the one in the photo.

DIY Hair Serum
I started using hair serum religiously last year. I read that hair loss was common in women over 50 due to shifts in hormones, as well as genetic predisposition. Although I have thick hair and lose a lot in the shower, I noticed that the amount collecting at the drain was more than usual. Instead of applying the serum after washing my hair as most serums call for, I apply it to my scalp before bed 3 times a week. Anywhere from 2 to 3 dropperfuls. I spend maybe 5 to 10 minutes massaging the serum into my scalp. I don’t wrap my hair in anything and surprisingly, my pillowcase is not stained from the oils. Rosemary and Lavender are amazing for hair growth and support. Cedarwood helps to rebalance the natural oils in your hair and is excellent for scalp health. Not only does Geranium supports healthy hair but for women like me, over 50 and on the cusp of menopause, it’s super supportive! Geranium is shown to be beneficial to women’s reproductive health by supporting healthy estrogen levels and symptoms related to menopause.
The beauty of personal care is that it indeed is PERSONAL. You can modify what you include in your daily routines and how much time you spend on those routines. I try to keep my daily routine simple. And I definitely want to keep my personal care products as free from toxins as possible. If you’d like to explore more on personal care, download this ebook: “Essential Oils and Personal Care”.
