Show of hands if you’re one of the 50 million Americans that suffer from seasonal allergies The past few weeks have been BRUTAL…stuffy nose, sneezing, red, itchy eyes. All the things that let us know that blooming season is upon us. We’re usually very good at starting our spring allergy prep in mid-February. But with all the life events taking over our days, we somehow forgot
Luckily, our oils provide immediate relief for those allergy symptoms. You probably have these three powerhouse oils already: Lavender, Lemon and Peppermint. And they are pretty much 3 of the 5 oils that are heavily used in our home during this time of year. Here’s what we’re reaching for to support us during this allergy season:
Works as a natural antihistamine and possesses strong anti-inflammatory properties that will relieve most allergic reactions. Immunoglobulin E (IgE) are antibodies produced by the immune system. If you have an allergy, your immune system overreacts to an allergen by producing antibodies, IgE. These antibodies travel to cells that release chemicals, causing an allergic reaction. A study published in 1999 showed lavender essential oil inhibited IgE response, decreasing the release of histamine in induced allergic reactions.
The main chemical constituents are Limonene, β-pinene, and γ-terpinene. Experimental research has demonstrated that ingestion of limonene may support the body’s immune system. In one study, limonene was shown to prevent the release of inflammatory mediators and reduced the migration of neutrophils, the first cells recruited to the site of the allergic reaction. Neutrophil recruitment by allergens contribute to allergic sensitization and allergic inflammation.
One of the main chemical components in peppermint essential oil is 1,8-Cineole. 1,8-cineole is known for its mucolytic (thin mucus, making it less thick and sticky and easier to cough up) on the respiratory tract. Menthol, another main chemical constituent, is known as a cold receptor agonist and is widely used in the relief of respiratory symptoms such as coughing and chest congestion. Previous studies have demonstrated that menthol reduces bronchoconstriction and airway hyperresponsiveness.
Opens up the sinus and lungs, improving circulation, which reduces the symptoms of allergies. It works as an expectorant, but also has anti-inflammatory, bronchodilating, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic effects. Eucalyptus contains a very high concentration of eucalyptol (also know as 1,8-cineol). The results of this study characterize 1,8-cineol as strong inhibitor of IL-1beta (cytokine interleukin-1β) which exacerbates damage during chronic disease and acute tissue injury.
Helps purify and freshen the air when diffused. Air-X is a blend of essential oils: Litsea, Tangerine, Grapefruit, Frankincense, and Cardamom. Litsea’s two main chemical components – geranial and neral – offer cleansing benefits. Grapefruit’s primary constituent is limonene, which is also present in other citrus oils including Tangerine, contributes to its cleansing and purifying properties. Frankincense offers many powerful soothing benefits and a warm, rich aroma. Cardamom has a high 1,8-cineole content.
With these five oils you can find tons of support for you and your family during this allergy season. Some of our favorite ways to use these oils:
